Week 11 in Baires - We're still getting to know the city. . .

Homemade empanadas, yummy...

This week ended with homemade empanadas and drinks (John’s cognac and lemon-lime soda for me) on the tiled patio with Cesara Evora playing in the background.

Reflecting on this last week, it was pretty uneventful.
  • Walks to Staples for print outs of the proposal and letters.
  • We made 3 trips to the post office - mailing out packages, Xmas letters and a proposal for John’s book.
  • Daily trips to the panderia for alfajores and media lunas.
  • Daily Tango practice in the evenings at our apartment this week.

The tango lesson on Friday went well, as usual.  We are getting to know the “regulars” in the class and continually thank them for their patience and help.  We had a nice surprise while we were all putting on our street shoes after class.  Arturo, the manager/partner, of Cultura Tanguera, stood in the middle of the dance floor and sang for us all.

It finished up the evening in a celebratory  mood and we all said our goodbyes and gave well wishes, Feliz Navidads, because John and I will be on our way to Bariloche next Friday during the class.

This weekend, we took buses and the subway to La Boca to look at one of the historical museums and then to the other side of town, Palermo, to see what was there. Mostly, we wanted to get more comfortable with the public transportation. The subway is easy, there are maps everywhere there is a subway entrance and the cashiers are very helpful. The bus system is still a bit of a mystery…

All the soldiers on horseback are named
except the lone black rider on the far left
Who is he and why is he the only one not named? Did he really exist?
Why paint him in the picture?

We took our Sunday walk to Av Florida and Av Defensa to find John a leather bound journal , the sun was hot and the cobblestone streets were crowded – we were successful quickly and then came home to cool off and nap.

Muy facil...

As I started this week’s blog entry, we ended this week with my discovery at the grocery store of empanada skins so I could make delicious empanadas easily.

After a leisurely dinner, we took beers to the rooftop to view the Baires skyline. It was pretty nice up there with the evening breezes.

A lovely way to end the week.

Next week – a private Tango lesson with Severine, a visit with Sally and Alex (friends from Monterey) and then off to Bariloche for the whirlwind  Christmas trip to see the rest of Argentina. The next posting will probably be before we leave for Bariloche – maybe...
