While Sierra Madre is in Smoke and Flames………………. We are in Pau

The main concern in this household in Pau this week has been
in Sierra Madre, California and the Eaton Fire

Eaton Fire
behind our house in Sierra Madre

Our son, David, and his wife Yayoi Oguma arrived in Sierra Madre with 5 large suitcases on Tuesday afternoon to get settled in the house for this year until October while we are in France.

They arrived during the Severe Wind Warnings of the century.  It made the arrival even more exciting for Yayoi whose life long dream is to live in the United States since she came for a summer on a Home Stay Program in Orange County.

They were there for less than 5 hours when the electricity went out it got dark they looked outside and saw the flames up on the hill.  “Hmm, maybe we should evacuate” was Dave’s answer to Yayoi’s concern. Thank goodness, the next door neighbors, who just finished packing up their car and were leaving town, came back and told them to grab some stuff, get in the car and they’d take them to a hotel.

To make this long story short - everyone is safe and the house(s) are standing without any damage. The fire is 15% contained, winds are down so people are able to return to their homes, if the homes are there. The neighbors are in their house and safe without internet, with a generator, but no real electricity or gas.  Water is on, but not drinkable. Dave and Yayoi will be at their hotel until next Wednesday or Thursday.

I did spent an afternoon with David and Christie because they were able to get live coverage of the fire on their TV.  I came home after a calming glass of wine.

Thursday, We had a tour of the Resistance Museum of Pau…in English,
sponsored by the ExPats of Pau Pyrenees.

The hotel where the Germans headquartered.
The tower of this hotel was a hiding place for Jews,
 who were never discovered.

A very interesting history of this lovely little city.
I am continually impressed.

The weather is nice, I have my new debit card and all is well in Sierra Madre
